What is a PDP content coverage rate?

PDP content coverage rate is the percentage of product detail pages (PDPs) within a brand's or retailer's catalog that have rich media content, specifically video or interactive visual content, available to shoppers. It is calculated as: (number of PDPs with video or interactive content) divided by (total number of active PDPs), expressed as a percentage. Current industry benchmarks show that most ecommerce brands have rich media on fewer than 5% of their product catalog, meaning 95%+ of PDPs show only static images and text descriptions, creating a significant conversion gap. The PDP content coverage rate matters because product pages with video consistently outperform static pages on add-to-cart rate, time on page, and conversion, while also reducing return rates. For large catalogs (tens of thousands to millions of SKUs), achieving meaningful PDP content coverage rate improvement historically required prohibitive production investment, shooting, editing, and deploying a video for each product. AI-generated content (AIGC) changes this constraint: AI can produce video from existing product images, specs, and catalog data at a fraction of traditional production cost, making high PDP content coverage rate achievable at catalog scale for the first time. PDP content coverage rate is emerging as a key ecommerce performance indicator alongside conversion rate and average order value.
